The library is located behind the Administrative Block and adjacent to the main canteen of the Institute.

Faculty members, research scholars, staff members, and students of the institute.

IIT(ISM) faculty members, students and staff members are bona-fide members of the library. Please visit the library to get your membership.

Faculty members, students and researchers from Government, academic and R&D organizations are allowed to refer the library collection free of charge against introduction letters from their respective organizations with permission of the librarian.
Faculty members, students and researchers from private engineering colleges (AICTE approved) can use the library only if their college is an institutional member of the IIT(ISM) library.
An individual affiliated to a corporate house and/or industry can use the library only if his/ her organization is a Corporate Member of the IIT (ISM) Library.

General library rules

  • 1.   The Central Library, IIT(ISM), Dhanbad follows an open access system.
  • 2.   The Library is following Universal Decimal Classification scheme for the shelf arrangement of books.
  • 3.   While entering the library, readers should leave their personal belongings, such as bags, brief-cases, personal books and parcels near the counter reserved for this purpose. However, they can carry loose papers note books and Laptop (without bag).
  • 4.   A user is supposed to switch off his/ her cell phones while entering the library.
  • 5.   Books or other materials taken from the stacks should not be re-shelved by the user/readers. Books should be left on the reading tables after use.
  • 6.   Readers should maintain peace in the library and should not disturb other users in any way.
  • 7.   Smoking and eatable items are strictly prohibited.
  • 8.   Chairs and tables should not be disturbed from their positions.
  • 9.   Users should avoid resting their feet on tables, chairs, shelves, window sills.
  • 10.   Readers leaving the library should allow the library/security staff to examine reading material their personal belongings.
  • 11.   Issued materials should be protected from rain, dust, insects, etc.
  • 12.   Readers should not deface, mark, cut, mutilate or damage library material in any way. If anyone is found doing so, he/she will be charged the full replacement cost of the material.
  • 13.   Members are supposed to inform the library regarding change in department, status, e-mail, address, etc.
  • 14.   Personal papers and non-library materials should not be left unattended on tables.
  • 15.   Do not move books/journals from its specific area to another area./li>
  • 16.   Do not give your Id-card to others. If one transfers his/ her library card to other and caught in the circulation counter, membership of both the users will be cancelled at least for 6 months. In addition, a fine of Rs. 1000/- will be imposed on each of them.
  • 17.   The holder of ID-Card is responsible for any book issued against it as shown by library records.
  • 18.   If one book of a set is damaged or lost, the member concerned shall be liable to replace the whole set.
  • 19.   If a book is not returned to the library when due, an overdue charge of Re 1.00 per volume per day is levied.

Please Do :

  • 1.   Outsiders are instructed to sign the register kept at the Check Point, while entering the library with due permission from the library authority.
  • 2.   Show the documents which are being taken out of the library, to the staff at the check point.
  • 3.   Contact the staff on duty/section staff / shift in-charge for any queries.
  • 4.   Keep the library premises in order.

No. The borrower has to visit the library physically to get the document/books issued.

Go to library home page. Click E-Resources, again click Procured E-Books from sub-menu. The system will list all the e-books available.

Yes. Library may recall the document for any purpose. It is recommended to return all the books before proceeding on long leave for optimum use of the library resources by all.

No Id-password is required. IP-enabled access to e-resources is provided inside the IIT (ISM) campus.

Yes. Off-campus access to subscribed e-resources is provided to the faculty members through remote access.

Please return all the dues/borrowed items from the Library and get the clearance.

OPAC stands for “Online Public Access Catalogue”. This is a database of all books, reference books, e-books, theses, reports, patents, standards etc. available in the library. It enables speedy searching of a particular book, books on a given subject, and/or a book by an author.

Visit the library, choose the books you like to borrow, carry these books to the Circulation Counter. Show your ID Card. The library staff will assist you in getting these books issued to you.

9:30 am to 1:00 pm and 1:30 pm to 7:00 pm on all working days (Monday to Friday).

Yes. A member is required to pay late fee. A borrower returning books after 30 days will be liable to a fine @ Re 1/day/book.

Reference books are not issued out.

Reference books and SRB Section books are kept in separate sections of the library. The reference books and the SRB books are marked with and SRB respectively on the book plate pasted on the inside cover of the book. These books not issued out.

A borrower needs to replace a lost book by procuring a latest edition of the book from the market.

Book arrival notice is sent to the project coordinator for arrival of project related books. For more details, please contact: Officer In-charge, Book Acquisition Section.

No. There is no limit on the number of books to be recommended. However, the purchase of books in a year will be restricted within the allotted budget for each department/ center / Project.

References collection mainly contains encyclopedias, handbooks, dictionaries, directories, atlases, audio, video, CD with books, only CD and some rare collection of books.

First contact the library staff responsible for shelving of books in that area. If not satisfied, please contact Staff at Circulation Counter or In-charge, Circulation Section.

No. The Library does not allow personal books for study inside the library. However, the Outer Reading Hall is open for you to bring and use your personal/ issued books. A personal book once brought inside the Central Library shall be seized. After proper verification the book will be returned with the gate pass only after 15 days.

Yes, the library can arrange a limited number of copies of articles on inter-library loan from other libraries.

The Open Reading Hall (ORH) is kept open from 9:00 am to 11:45 pm.
